Cohens moral panic

Cohen’s Moral panic

A threat emerges to societies values which is presented in a stylised and stereotypical fashion people with social power stir up moral panic such as editors, bishops, politicians and suggest a cause of action, they also try and create a ‘folk devils’ to be the scapegoats

Concern - There must be awareness that the behaviour of the group or category in question is likely to have a negative impact on society.
Hostility - Hostility towards the group in question increases, and they become "folk devils". A clear division forms between "them" and "us".
Consensus - Though concern does not have to be nationwide, there must be widespread acceptance that the group in question poses a very real threat to society. It is important at this stage that the "moral entrepreneurs" are vocal and the "folk devils" appear weak and disorganised.
Disproportionality - The action taken is disproportionate to the actual threat posed by the accused group.
Volatility - Moral panics are highly volatile and tend to disappear as quickly as they appeared due to a wane in public interest or news reports changing to another topic

Semiotics

A theorist called sausse start there is a sign signified in everything one example of this is:
If rain is the sign then sadness or a miserable atmosphere is what is being signified
Denotation – what is there
Connotation – what it might mean or suggest
Semiotics is the study of signs used to describe anything that carries a meaning whether it’s a word, symbol/image or a sound
Media text are encoded by the producers and then decoded by the audience
Signifiers
Because of the nature we have to view signs as having two distinct parts:
The signifier which is the physical sign itself and denotations/ connotations – this is the most important thing is that signs are open to many interpretations

Feminism

Feminists believe that media outputs the product of a patriarchal aimed at dis-powering women, feminist hate the idea that women are inferior to men. The sex equality act was not passes until 1975 which meant that women are now equal to men in every way. Laura mulveys theory created a theory called the male gaze. Men dominate the media and construct the media for other men. Objectification of female characters in relation to this controlling male gaze, male movie star or characters such as James Bond are feministic they turn the women in the film into objects also actresses are normally supporting the main role also sometimes the leading actress is just in the film as eye candy to please the male gaze for the male audience.
